Every scientist has valuable information that does not fit into
existing database or document systems.
Stored research data often needs additional descriptive
information (metadata) before it can be effectively reused or shared.
Such metadata is often not available in a
computer-readable format
and also usually not linked to the original research data.
The Axiope project, which is based in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, is developing flexible tools for
managing large volumes of metadata about local raw data
(images, binary files, data on CDs, etc). This will allow
scientists not only to organize their research data,
but also to share data more easily with collaborators.
Data sharing is increasingly important as a means of scientific
communication, and may soon be a firm requirement for certain
sources of funding.
